Introduction & Overview
International Model School for the Deaf presently located inside Macgregor NYSC Orientation Camp in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was established in the year 2000 by Reverend Uche Promise Nwode, a deaf man, who is also the current South East Zonal Coordinator of the Nigerian National Association of Deaf.
The school took off at Abakpa Nike in Enugu City, Enugu state and started classes on the 2nd day of March, year 2000.
In February 2006, Ebonyi State government donated funds and blocks of houses to the school to enable it relocate to its present site inside Macgregor NYSC Orientation Camp in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.
The school comprises Primary, Secondary and Vocational sections viz ;
— Primary Classes 1 – 6
— Junior Secondary classes 1 – 3
— Senior Secondary classes 1 – 3
— Entrepreneurship / Vocational Skills acquisition section.
Facilities available at the school include decent separate hostels for male and female students, staff quarters, school hall, spacious classrooms, a standard football pitch, children’s play ground, vocational workshops, bore hole, standby power plant, practical computer laboratory, a large school crops farm, a functional One-Thousand birds capacity poultry farm, economic trees including mangoes, cashew, ogbono/bush mangoes, bananas/plantain, pineapples, oranges, ukpaka, assorted vegetables, etc.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
International Model School for the Deaf is resolutely committed to equip deaf children and youth with qualitative Academic education, Entrepreneurship and Vocational skills, balanced self esteem, confidence, excellent character and sound moral rectitude to enable them live as independent, self-reliant, flourishing and fulfilled citizens.
The school aims to provide education for life, succor, skills and a secured future for deaf children, women and youth.
ACHIEVEMENTS
- The pioneer students of the school who enrolled in year 2000 graduated in 2005 after passing the O’level exams (WAEC and NECO SSCE) in flying colours. The school has maintained outstanding performance in external examinations including the Senior School Certificate Exams, Basic Education Certificate Exams formally known as Junior School Certificate Exams, Unified Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Exams and First School Leaving Certificate Exams.
- Many ex-students of the school have graduated from Tertiary Institutions across the country with distinction. They include Mrs Blessing Idenyi who graduated from the University of Calabar: Mr Amobi Nwagwu who obtained N.C.E. from Enugu State College of Education: Mr Obinna Ike who obtained .H.N.D from I.M.T.Enugu: Mr. Jonathan Chukwuemeka Nzem who was one of the best graduating N.C.E. students of his set at the Federal College of Education(Special), Oyo, Oyo state, in 2012: Mrs. Chidinma Blessing Nwode who obtained N.C.E.from Abia State College of Education and is presently teaching at her alma mater: Mr Amala Njelita who was the best graduating student of his department at the University of Calabar and is currently a serving Youth corps member in Sokoto, Sokoto state.
- Our ex-students who trained in entrepreneurship and vocational skills are also making waves in their chosen vocations including Mr Emeka Igwe who owns a large shoes manufacturing factory at Aba, Abia state. He has cars, apprentices and workers under him and is widely respected as a diligent and successful businessman.
- The school offers scholarship to indigent deaf children and orphans.
- The school has won several first position prizes in inter schools competitions organized by Afikpo North Local Government Council.
- From January to March 2008 the school played host to two European Deaf ladies from Italy, namely Chiara De Monte and Tizani Gulli.
- The school has done a lot in creating public awareness on the rights, potentials and abilities of Deaf children and the need for the Society to embrace Sign Language as the appropriate medium of communication with deaf citizens.
- Tens of NYSC corps members are posted by the Federal government to teach in the school every year and the school trains them to master Sign Language before they pass out of the NYSC scheme.
